University project

This was a group project for a three-day workshop with Jim Sutherland exploring dualities in a typographic way. Our chosen pair of words was up/down.

A repeating pattern made of the word DOWN in a wavy typeface, painted in neon green and black paint on plywood. A repeating pattern made of the word UP in a wavy typeface, painted in white paint on a neon pink background.

We developed a repeating pattern with each of these words, set in Cemer by Michele Galluzzo. We tried a few configurations, choosing the final versions for being dynamic and conveying a bouncing movement. We then laser-cut these into paper, and used this as a stencil to sponge on the paint.

Close-up of the stencil laid onto the plywood painted green, with a black smudge of paint on the table and stencil. Ping-pong GIF
